Introduction

The coding in this risk scenario dashboard has been developed manually over a period of time, as a proof of concept to explore patters of associations between factors which we can identify in the Press Releasees. As such, when you look in detail at samples of press releases, the detailed coding itself may at times appear to be inaccurate or ambiguous. The Discovering safety team will be interested to hear from users of the dashboard about their experiences.

Feedback is welcomed and can be supplied to via the following address: Gordon.Crick@hse.gov.uk

The press release dashboard user guide will provide a basic overview of the main pages, interactive icons, and their use together with how to navigate around the dashboard.

General Use Icons and Functions

Below is a table of the most common buttons and selection icons that will dynamically filter the page in which they are present on.

Title Icon Description
Return to home Select to return to the main navigation page.
Filter by Risk Scenarios Select Risk Scenarios which are Unique or Not Unique
Search box A search box which will search and filter the page based on the word entered.
Filter by category One of six differing filters. The drop-down arrow allows the filtering of the page by the selected title.

Definitions

‘unique’ are risk scenarios that are singular in their entity meaning they have only happened once, whereas the ‘not unique’ items are risk scenarios which have happened multiple times, and ‘select all’ are all risk scenarios present within the dashboard.

Pages

Here is a more detailed description of how to use the following pages.

Introduction Page

This page is the main landing page, a general overview of how a risk scenario is classified within the dashboard can be identified to the left-hand side of the page. Whereas the page navigation found on the right-hand side is a series of buttons which will navigate you to your desired page. Click the grey button and the dashboard will automatically navigate to the page selected.

Most Common Identical Risk Scenarios

This page houses a series of doughnut charts along the top and a table depicting the most common risk scenarios identified to have these classifications.

Within the page the user can interact with the doughnut charts, by clicking on them, which will dynamically filter not only the adjoining charts but the detailed table below. Equally this is the same for the table if the user is to highlight any of the line items the doughnut charts above will filter showing the representative percentage of the line item.

Risk Category Breakdown & Risk Scenario Breakdown Including Activity

These tables summarise the press release data source into a series of simple and intuitive column graphs by each category. Users can interact with each graph by clicking on a specific item which in turn will dynamically filter the additional graphs to give a percentage breakdown of the selected item. Simply click on another graph item and the dashboard will filter based off the user’s request.

There is also a ‘general use function’ in the top right-hand corner of the dashboard which can apply additional filters to this page which can be used separately or in conjunction with the user selecting the item on a specific graph. To reiterate ‘unique’ are risk scenarios that are singular in their entity meaning they have only happened once, where as the ‘not unique’ items are risk scenarios which have happened multiple times, and ‘select all’ are all risk scenarios within the dashboard.

Detailed Risk Scenario & Detailed Risk Details

General use functions present within these pages are, Filter by Risk Scenarios, Search box, Filter by category. These ‘general use functions’ can apply additional filters to this page which can be used in isolation or in conjunction with the user selecting or filtering additional ‘general use functions’ in multiple combinations.

These pages show the individual categorisation of the risk scenario or the text which the press release is comprised of. The icons located to the right of the ID column depict whether the risk scenario is either ‘not unique (defined previously) or one of the most common risk scenarios.

N.B if a filter is applied on either of these pages the results will be common to both.

Additional filters on these pages are the top text buttons which are located along the top of the page named “To the detailed Press Release” or “Back to the Risk Scenario”. By interacting with the buttons users will be able to navigate between the categorised and detailed text versions of the press release.

Scenario Matching Table

General use functions present within these pages are, Filter by Risk Scenarios, Search box, Filter by category. These ‘general use functions’ can apply additional filters to this page which can be used in isolation or in conjunction with the user selecting or filtering additional ‘general use functions’ in multiple combinations.

This page visualises risk scenarios in a tabular format and allows for a high function of filtering to allow users to analyse risk scenarios. Whilst there are six categories to each risk scenario this page aims to depict common scenarios who have four, five or six matching categories as potential emerging or common scenarios.

Additional filter functions are in the form of a slider to the left-hand side. This can be used to filter the count the scenario that is present within the dashboard. Equally the icon in the top right-hand corner allows for the user to select the scenario type, for example the user can filter the dashboard to look for scenarios where five of the six categories match and identify which of these scenarios have happened the most frequently.
